The Lonely Brimestone
the mise en scene of the costuming is very effective here as it dictates the genre of the film. the use of a priest robe costuming alongside the use of props of a gun and sunglasses empahises the sarcasm behind this charecter in the short film.
the use of editing filters here to make the sky have a green haze to it is effective here as it shows the charecter as supernatural and abnormal. the fact he is the only person in the frame shown innatural lighting dictates his importance. this is also dictated by the rule of thirds.
when you think of religious people, you generally associate them with people who are one with the environment and environmentally friendly, the fact it is winter and all the leave on the trees are gone convey a whole new outlook on religious people. the controversial representatio here is effective as it lets us know right from the begining of the short film that this is a religious satire genre.
the mise en scene of the use of glasses is effective here as it emphasises the element of comedy by almost recreating the arnold schwarzenegger look from the terminator
in general, black robes are worn by priests and think nothing of it, but when we look deeper into the colour and what it means, along side the prop of the gun, we look deeper into the personality of this charecter and priests in general, black is usually associated with darkness and evilness, and by emphaisises this perception it makes the audience think harder about their automatic judgement. this is efective as one of the key aspects of short films is to make you think.
A Haunted House
Although A Haunted House isnt a short film, it incorporates a very good religious satire element within. for this reason i have decided to do a Still frame analysis on. i will be doing a short textual analsis on this also as i feel this was carried out well in the sense it didnt cross the line to the point it became extremely offensive but also got really close to it.
the use of costumming empahsies the point that this is ajoke. you expect priests to where minamlist clothing and not be amused by materialistic things but this priest a chain around his neck instead of a rosary and has a smartphone and seems to be watching a form of adult film. this is going very close to the social boundaries where its nearing offensive but not to the point where its a direct attack on the religion itslef.
the use of the image on the smartphone has a big impact. this again goes against traditonal representations of religious figures nuns are usually seen as holy and calm innocent people who help churches to run as they do. seeing this representation is effective here as it challenges our views by seeing a nun exposed in this way. the way it makes us think is an important convention of short film.
Religulous is a feature length documentry interviewing religious leaders and believers and discussing the reasons they believe. the interviewer has strong opposing views to faith as awhole and the release of this film causeed outrage.
Chained
the mise en scene of the postiononing of the charecters is effective way as it disticntly dictats power and status. the man standing up appears to have put fear into the other charxetr hence thr reasoning fo him being under the table.
the mise en scene of the colour of the lights in the background give the still frame a malnourishing sense. it isnt well lit like you would expect a modern house to be, its dull which gives the sense it is or should be a deserted house with no inhabitance. the colour yellow also connotes illness as it is a pale yellow this leads me to assume maybe one of these charecters may be ill and due to the postiong of the characters the one under the table looks to be ill
the use of lighting is effective here as it makes us as audience memebrs make assumptions although the house does to be (in the time the film was set) a modern houshold. although the use of dark florring could connote the foundation of this household is far from noraml and modern and thta it is indeed a dark and mysterious house. this is also evident through the dark edges of the shot like the dark cupboard.
